THE GOLD NUGGETS
Nine evidence layers that change the strategy.
These are not generic career claims. Every comparison is calculated from the same 1,000 salary-transparent descriptions. Start with the visual read, then open the evidence when you want the detail.
between the highest and lowest sector median
from coordinator work to Technical / IT PM
822 of 1,000 descriptions
01MARKET FIRSTSector choice changes the salary baseline
The highest sector median is $110,000 in Technology. The lowest is $72,652 in Finance & consulting. That is a 51.4% sample gap before choosing a certification.
02TITLE ECONOMICSIn PM, the role family can more than double the median
Technical / IT PM carries a $140,725 median across n=60. Program Coordinator sits at $64,273 across n=92. Search by the work you want to own, not only by “project management.”
03THE CERTIFICATION PARADOXPMP is uncommon, but clusters in higher-paying descriptions
PMP appears in 16% of the sample. Those descriptions carry a $123,361 median, versus $79,520 when PMP is not named. This is an association, not proof that the credential causes the salary.
04DEGREE REALITYA degree mention barely changes the overall sample median
694 descriptions name at least one education level and have a $82,924 median. The 306 with no explicit degree mention have a $83,200 median. A degree may still help selection, but it does not explain the pay spread in this sample.
05EXPERIENCE LADDERThe explicit minimum rises with the median
Only numeric minimums detected in the description are counted. “Not specified” means no explicit number was found, not that the employer requires zero experience.
06HIGHER-PAY LANGUAGEExecution vocabulary marks different kinds of work
The strongest salary associations with reliable sample sizes are not basic office skills. They describe delivery complexity. These differences are descriptive and may reflect role or sector mix.
07TOOLS ARE DIALECTSThere is no universal PM software stack
Technology over-indexes on Jira. Construction speaks Procore, Primavera P6 and AutoCAD. Manufacturing brings SAP. Finance and consulting mention Excel most heavily. The useful question is not “Which PM tool is best?” It is “Which tool proves I understand my target sector?”
TOP 25% VS BOTTOM 25%
Most common does not mean most valuable.
We separated the 250 highest-paid roles from the 250 lowest-paid roles. This exposes the language that differentiates the two ends of the sample instead of merely counting what appears most often.
30.3× more prevalent in the top quartile
Nearly identical. Essential, but not differentiating.
More common in the lower-paid quartile.

CROSS-SECTOR OPPORTUNITY MAP
Find the obvious winner. Then find the underdogs.
The map compares median pay with low stated barriers. Bubble size represents the share of that sector above the full-sample top-quartile threshold. Because the study uses balanced sector quotas, this is not a market-volume chart.

Low stated barrier means no certification, no education level and no numeric minimum above one year were detected. It does not prove that a role is easy to obtain.
Association is not causation. Sector, role family and employer mix can influence every salary comparison.
